How To Monitor NDI Sources From Any Networked PC
August 11, 2016 by Chuck Baker
Many productions have more managers, crew, and talent who need to see what’s going on than they have monitors available for the purpose. Beyond equipment availability, there may be location restrictions and specific needs of a particular team member. NewTek’s NDI can help reduce or eliminate that bottleneck for many situations. In a fully NDI-enabled production suite, any networked PC can be used to monitor any available NDI source on the network. This means that any computer system involved in production can also be repurposed to provide the person operating it with any view they need.
NewTek NDI Video Monitor is the free application that provides this capability to a standard networked PC; it is one of the five free applications in the NewTek NDI Tools Pack.
The NewTek NDI Tools Pack is a free download: NewTek NDI Tools Pack Download Page (registration required).
The file you download is an installer, “NewTek NDI Tools.exe”. Run the installer and follow the onscreen instructions to install the NDI Tools to your chosen system. Once installation is complete:
On your Windows Start Menu, go to All Apps.
Locate NewTek NDI Tools on the All Apps** *list, and click the arrow to dropdown the full list of NDI Tools. Select **NDI Video Monitor*.
This will open an application window on the desktop. The first time this application is opened, a graphic screen with the simple operating instructions will display.
Right-Click on the application window to see the list of available NDI sources on the network. For this example, we will select a PowerPoint presentation that is being sent out over the network by NewTek NDI Scan Converter.
The selected NDI source will now display on NDI Video Monitor. The video is both high-quality and very low latency, but also optimized for minimal impact on system resources, so the desktop can continue to be utilized for any job the user is involved in, for example, graphics production, feeding stats to the CG, etc.
NDI-enabled production multiplies the options available, both in terms of making anything on the network a video source, and making almost anything on the network a control or monitoring station useful to the production.
